Minebea Groundbreaking at Phnom Penh SEZ

At 8:30 am local time on Tuesday, May 24, Minebea Co., Ltd. held the groundbreaking ceremony of a new plant for small-sized motors (first stage construction work) at its own industrial site within Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone. The ceremony was carried out with approx. 300 persons in attendance-including H.E. Sok Chenda Sophea, Minister Attached to Prime Minister, Secretary General of Council for the Development of Cambodia and H.E. In December 2010, as the first motor manufacturer in Cambodia, Minebea was granted operation permit by the Cambodian government, and on April 1, 2011, began small-scale production at a rental plant (total floor space: 2,304?) within Phnom Penh SEZ.

Minebea President and CEO Yoshihisa Kainuma at the groundbreaking ceremonyWith a total floor space of 28,000? and planned to be operational by the end of 2011, the new plant will employ up to 900 staff at the end of this year. Minebea further plans to invest a total of ¥5 billion (~ $ 60 Million) in plant and equipment, and make the plant a large-scale mass-production facility with a maximum of 5,000 employees.

Minebea positions the Cambodian plant as a labor-intensive assembly site that will assemble small-sized motors mainly for office automation equipment, household appliances and digital equipment with supply of components from its plants in neighboring countries such as Thailand and Malaysia, thereby aiming for enhancement of production efficiency in the entire Asian region.
