Phnom Penh SEZ Launches Solar Energy Initiative

Cambodian leading economic zone opts for renewable energy to decrease CO2 footprint and energy cost at the industrial estate.

Phnom Penh, 21st June 2016 – On Tuesday 21st of June, Phnom Penh SEZ launched its "Clean Energy Initiative" during an official ribbon cutting ceremony at the special economic zone. After a 4 month installation project, the two new solar panel systems, which will supply a part of the infrastructure's electricity on the industrial estate, are now fully operational.

The event was Presided over by  H.E. Phay Bunchhoeun, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environment.

"We show that reducing our CO2 footprint doesn’t need to cost money, and that we will save money from day one in our operating costs without having to invest our own capital. To act in an environmentally responsible way does not require specific knowledge or skills about the technology – it’s a matter of wanting to make a first step in a positive direction and finding the right partners," says Stephen Evans, Owner Representative of Phnom Penh SEZ Plc.

The two new solar power systems are composed of 400 panels and generate about 15000 kWh per month. It is an important step to reduce the cost of Phnom Penh SEZ infrastructure services and a great way to gain operational experience.

"Cambodia has excellent solar resources and we believe that this solution will be of great value to a lot of our existing and future customers. Some of our future investors are asking for solar solutions, and having those systems in place gives us a real advantage," says Evans.

Phnom Penh SEZ has formed a long-term partnership with Singapore-headquartered Company Cleantech Energy Corporation, which provides the equipment and technical support to enable the industrial estate to self-generate solar energy. A monitor showing the electricity that is produced and the amount of carbon saved every day has been launched during the ceremony and is now set up permanently in the company lobby.

"Tenants, investors, employees and all stakeholders understand and agree that Phnom Penh SEZ is truly committed to its ideal of social responsibility and reducing expenditures for tenants," said Robert Anderson, Deputy CEO of LCH Investment Group and in charge of spearheading Phnom Penh SEZ’s (a subsidiary of LCH Investment Group) drive to provide additional, clean power options to the estate.

For Raju Shukla, Chairman of Cleantech Solar Corporation, Phnom Penh SEZ is at the forefront of Cambodia’s clean energy movement by opting for solar power now. "There is a lot of interest in the market but whilst some companies watch, others act and I think Phnom Penh SEZ is putting itself in the leading group. They truly want to lead by example about the benefits, both for them as a business, as well as for the community and the environment."
